Shy-Drager syndrome

Studies with ganglionic blockade reveal that sympathetic nervous system contributes to essential hypertension, and severes supine hypertension in patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA).

Multiple system atrophy or Shy-Drager syndrome is a severe dysautonomia in which central control of autonomic function is impaired.

Shy-Drager syndrome, presents with multiple systems degeneration: autonomic, corticospinal and corticobulbar, amyotrophic and even bulbar dysfunction.

One of the most unexpected findings in recent years has been the constitutive role of sympathetic activity in the supine hypertension of autonomic failure.

The Shy-Drager syndrome combines features of Parkinsonism with damage to a particular part of the nervous system. Because the autonomic nervous system is involved in maintaining blood pressure on changing from a sitting to a standing position, patients with Shy-Drager symptoms tend to have severe dizziness on standing because the blood pressure drops; they are also show problems in control of the bladder sexual impotence.
