Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (sometimes called an ARB) used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.
Telmisartan oral tablet is a prescription drug that’s available as the brand-name drug Micardis. It’s also available as a generic drug.
Telmisartan administered at bedtime, as opposed to morning dosing, improved the sleep time-relative blood pressure declines toward a more dipper pattern without loss in 24-hour efficacy. (Hypertension. 2007;50:715–722)
Telmisartan is in a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. ARBs are becoming more popular for the treatment of hypertension because they are effective and very well tolerated. Telmisartan is an effective treatment of hypertension in once daily doses of 20 to 80 mg. Telmisartan works by blocking the effect of angiotensin. This makes the blood vessels relax more. It also allows kidney to get rid of excess water and salt. This helps lowering blood pressure.
