High blood pressure can be reduced by tea active substances

A study (published Archives of Internal Medicine 2012) of 95 patients from Western Australia suggested that drinking three cups a day of black tea can reduce blood pressure by 2-3 mmHg in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Black tea is a good source of flavonoids. Flavonoids protect LDL cholesterol from oxidation, and this can reduce the risk of atherosclerosis, stroke, hypertension and heart attack.
Oral administration of tea polyphenols also yielded a decrease of blood pressure in patients. The reported active substances include tea extracts, polyphenols and tea tannin. Tea tannins (2 to 4 mg orally) could reduce the systolic blood pressure in rats. Investigation proved that tea components, especially TFDG and EGCG showed beneficial effect.

In addition, theanine, an amino acid found in tea produces a calming effect on the brain. It induces a feeling of relaxation and was found to be effective lowers the blood pressure of spontaneous hypertensive rates.

Tea polyphenols and caffeine may also ameliorate the development of hypertension by improving the renal circulatory state as a result of its direct action on the kidney, including the activation of the kinin-kallikrein-prostaglandin system in the kidney.

Drinking coffee reduce risk of high blood pressure

Coffee as a health food means the classic beverage brewed from ground coffee beans. It is the coffee, not the milk and sugar that provides health benefits.

Research shows that coffee may actually decrease the chances of getting type-2 diabetes. In addition, coffee is no longer felt to be a risk factor for high blood pressure.

A 12 years study of 155,000 women found that drinking caffeinated cola may be associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure. However, the same causal relationship was not found with caffeinated coffee. In fact, the study suggested that women who drink caffeinated coffee may actually have a reduced risk of high blood pressure.

A 1989 Norwegian study of 30,000 middle-aged men and women demonstrated that drinking more than one cup of coffee a day is positively correlated with a reduction on both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

In other words, people in a high-risk group of hypertension who drink more than one cup of coffee a day tend to have lower blood pressure than people who do not.

If a person is said to suffer from hypertension, this expression means that the average arterial pressure of that person is above the level which is accepted as normal. The increase in blood pressure is an interesting health problem for three reasons; it is frequently seen, its effects are sometimes destructive and its symptoms are not recognizable even in the later phases of the clinical course.

Its effects are common and seen in all organs and it is determined as the only and most important factor of risk for especially both the coronary heart attacks and the cerebrovascular diseases. Also, it may cause direct congestive heart failure and renal inadequacy. There is not a threshold value, high level of which can be regarded as hypertensive and low level, safe for individuals, women and men.

In fact, this value increases gradually as the destructive effects of the blood pressure increases. Therefore, hypertension should be determined subjectively, in a way. Several people agree with the idea that the basic criterion of the diastolic pressure is always to be above 90 mmHg. That the systolic pressure is always 140 mmHg is defined as hypertension, but the clinical results of this, are different from diastolic hypertension for some reasons.

Very often doctors and other experts cannot even decide between them what an ideal blood pressure range is for an adult. However it is usually agreed that somewhere between 110/70 and 125/80 is considered to be an average blood pressure for a grown person, though someone with naturally low blood pressure may be closer to a range of 100/60 A blood pressure of 140/90 is considered to be high, though as a person gets older, this falls into the more normal range for people.

Blood doesn’t circulate in an even stream around the body, but travels in a constant series of spurts. Therefore the pressure peaks in the blood vessels just after a heart beat and then ebbs until the next one. This is a continuous process.

The two blood pressure figures represent the pressures when the forces are at their peak and at their lowest ebb. The stronger the arteries are, the more they resist the force of the blood and the lower the blood pressure.

As a person gets older, and the elasticity of their arteries weakens, the figures tend to rise. However the lower figure should still be less than 90 until that person at least reaches their sixties.

Many studies looking at blood pressure in both black and white people have found there is a higher prevalence of hypertension (High blood pressure) in black people than there is in white. This has led to further research in determining whether this is racially determined or just based on socioeconomic and dietary factors.
Some people suffering high blood pressure may find they just can’t pinpoint a cause for their problem. They may be fit, have a very healthy lifestyle yet their blood pressure remains consistently high for no apparent reason. This is called Primary or essential high blood pressure. However if the raised blood pressure is due to an underlying medical problem, it is known as Secondary High Blood Pressure.

Nearly one in four people in the Western world have high blood pressure. Many people don’t appreciate it is a dangerous condition that can lead to a heart attack kidney failure or stroke if it is left untreated. Yet there are thousands of people unaware they have high blood pressure who are walking around with a lethal time bomb ticking away inside them.

High blood pressure is a prominent risk factor for atherosclerosis. Elevated blood pressure damage the lining of arteries, creating a site at which atherosclerotic plaque forms.

Atherosclerosis is a disease of the arteries characterized by fatty deposits on the inner lining. Atherosclerosis increases the risk of heart attack. Research indicates that patients with high blood pressure have a seven fold increase in the risk of stroke.

If the arteries are damaged especially due to high blood pressure the inner surface of the walls can start to deteriorate.

To compensate, the artery grows new tissues that may create tiny bumps or scars. Cholesterol, white blood cells, and other deposits can begin to accumulate within these bumps.

It forces the heart to work harder and blood is pushed through the arteries with a greater force and adds the damage of the artery lining.

It also contributes to atherosclerosis. When atherosclerosis develops, it affects not only the coronary arteries but also all the other arteries. When the arteries in the brain become seriously narrowed, the result is a stroke.

Hardening of the arteries in the heart leads to heart failure and most likely detach, A hardening of the blood vessels supplying the kidneys leads to kidney failure, as well as all other illness related to non-functioning kidneys.

It seems the entire world is addicted to the caffeine in coffee and tea, and this may be the most popular drug of all.

The use of caffeine expanded with explosion of energy drinks in the last few years, especially with the younger people who did not drink coffee.

Unlike all other risk factors, it also affects your colleagues, family and friends (through passive smoking and the example you set to your children) and it costs as lot of money you could spend better in other ways.

Another benefit from these changes in diet is that they help lower blood cholesterol levels and so reduce the risk of developing coronary heart disease.

Another known cause us excessive alcohol (which means more than 4 units of alcohol a day for a man or 3 units a day for woman – a unit alcohol is one glass of wine or one single measure of spirits or half a pint of average strength beer or lager). Again the biggest effect is in young people, limiting alcohol intake often brings high blood pressure back to normal without any other treatment.
